PictureTHIS – a social word game where your friends try to guess words based on photo clues you provide – launched today for iOS and Android devices. Created by Hitcents, a Kentucky-based creative and interactive agency, PictureTHIS is a clever twist on games like Draw Something and benefits the artistically challenged by using photos instead of drawings.
Hitcents knew two things when they started developing the app concept. Because of the inherently social nature of the app, PictureTHIS had to be launched on both iOS and Android platforms. Users want their entire social network to be able to play the game with them, not just those on a particular device platform. And the app had to have a great user experience with a well-designed, performant user interface and great gamification mechanisms to keep play fun, competitive and engaging.
The app was built in 3 1/2 months using Xamarin, with 50% code sharing between iOS and Android. This allowed Hitcents to spend more time on richer app functionality, quality and the monetization aspects of the game.
Hitcents has published a great case study on the making of the app covering topics ranging from concept development, monetization, user interface design, focus group testing, development, scalability and much more – a great read for any mobile app developer. Read the case study, download the app and have fun!
